Chosen, Not Needed

Years ago, my husband and I got into a small argument.
Somewhere in the middle of it, he made a comment about me needing him.
And I remember stopping and saying,
“I don’t need you. I didn’t marry you because I need you. I’m capable on my own… I chose you because I want you in my life.”
At the time, I meant it as independence. Strength. Confidence.
(I can be a little stubborn.)
But I also wanted him to understand something deeper—
My love for him surpassed need.
Because being needed can feel like obligation…
But being wanted?
That’s love.
And that’s exactly how God loves us.
God is not lacking anything.
He is complete, whole, and self-sufficient.
“The God who made the world and everything in it… is not served by human hands, as if He needed anything.” — Acts 17:24-25
He doesn’t need our help.
He doesn’t need our strength.
He doesn’t even need our worship to be God.
And yet…
Out of everything He created,
God chose relationship.
Not because He had to—
but because He wanted to.
“I have loved you with an everlasting love…” — Jeremiah 31:3
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” — 1 John 3:1
That changes everything.
But here is the best part:
God didn’t wait for us to get it together before wanting us.
He saw every flaw.
Every failure.
Every moment we would fall short.
And He still said,
“I want them.”
What a joy to know our God loves us no matter what we have done.
We don’t have to earn our place or prove our worth.
He simply wants our presence—our companionship.
Just like in marriage, the beauty isn’t in needing someone to survive…
It’s in choosing them every day.
And that’s what God does with us.
Every single day.
God doesn’t need you to complete Him.
He chose you because He loves you.
And somehow…
that makes you even more valuable.
Valuable enough for Him to give up His Son
so that He could have a relationship with you.
And here’s the truth of the Gospel:
You don’t earn that kind of love.
You receive it.
All you have to do…
is choose Him.
